Welcome to another thrilling edition of “Thursday Numbers!” Are you ready?
Before we get started, please take off your mask; Halloween is next Thursday!
If this is your first time reading “Thursday Numbers,” where have you been? This is the column where I take a look at the numbers that are in the news (in descending order) and provide commentary (sometimes spiked with a little sarcasm).
This week I write about Zuckerberg, unemployment, SpongeBob, Cascade County (MT) Elections Department, Healhcare.gov, Texas high school football, legalizing marijuana, Brett Favre, Kansas City Chiefs & Denver Broncos, drunk driving, Mitt Romney’s new home, the final three F-15s, Dollar Menu, and much more!
2,278,668,214
That’s how much compensation (Approximately $2.3 billion) Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook brought home last year in salary, bonuses and stock awards.
So, how did you do last year?
350,000
That’s the number of people who filed new claims for unemployment last week according to the U.S. Department of Labor. It is a decrease of 12,000 from the week before.
26,000
According to UPI, “A Cincinnati cemetery has removed two SpongeBob tombstones worth $26,000 claiming the artwork ‘does not fit’ with the graveyard’s guidelines.”
Graveyards could use some humor…like maybe a sign at the entrance saying, “People are just dying to get in here.”
20,000
Sen. Ted Cruz is on his wife’s healthcare plan. Mrs. Cruz works for Goldman Sachs. The healthcare coverage is “worth at least $20,000 a year” according to this story in the New York Times.
Ted and I have something in common; I am on my wife’s healthcare plan, too. We’re different in most other areas, though. For example, I was born in the USA and Ted was born in Canada…
1,220
The Cascade County (MT) Elections Department continues to underperform. The Great Falls Tribune reports, “Of the 28,000 ballots that went out Oct. 16, 1,220 had the wrong candidates.”
While it’s wonderful that these ballots were quickly replaced with correct ballots, there seem to be problems in the Elections Department. Citizens need to trust the voting process.
1,054
I already have insurance, but I checked out the Healhcare.gov website and clicked on “See Plans in Your Area” link. The $1054 was the highest estimated price I would pay per month for Individual & Family medical insurance for me, my spouse, and my child in Cascade County, Montana. This is a “gold” plan and the price is before tax deductions.
After accessing the site, drones flew over my house.
Just kiddin on the last part…
496.10
I already have insurance, but I checked out the Healhcare.gov website and clicked on “See Plans in Your Area” link. The $496.10 was the cheapest estimated price I would pay a month for Individual & Family medical insurance for me, my spouse, and my child in Cascade County, Montana. This is a “catastrophic” plan and the price is before tax deductions.
By the way, I encountered zero glitches when accessing the “See Plans in Your Area” section of the website.
91
The final score in a Texas high school football game was 91-0, and a parent from the losing team filed a bullying report due to the lopsided score.
Sometimes it’s good to get your butt kicked…
58
According to Gallup, 58% of Americans say marijuana should be legalized.
I agree with that.
By the way, 38% of those polled said they had used marijuana.
The poll also found that a majority of potheads said they would love for Sen. Ted Cruz to read “Green Eggs and Ham” to them while they were stoned.
Just kiddin on that last part…
44
The St. Louis Rams lost their starting quarterback (Sam Bradford) to a season-ending injury. So who did they contact? Brett Favre, according to ESPN. Favre is 44 years old. He declined the offer.
Good for him, although I miss his style of playing.
25
Gallup released a poll yesterday that found, “25% of U.S. parents said they ‘frequently’ worry about their child being harmed at school”
7
The Kansas City Chiefs have won their first seven games this season. They only won two games last season.
Since Peyton Manning and the Broncos lost, Chiefs fans should remember the immortal line from Duke (the corner man) in Rocky IV, “You see? You see? He’s not a machine, he’s a man, he’s a man.”
6.5
You may have heard of Matthew Cordle, age 22. He made the YouTube confession in which he admitted that while he was driving drunk he killed Vincent Canzani, 61. The judge sentenced Cordle to six and a half years. Canzani’s daughter wanted the full sentence, which was eight and a half years.
Even eight and a half years seems like a pretty light sentence for killing someone…
5
Mitt Romney is building his fifth home according to this story.
The new home in Utah reportedly has a hidden room, so don’t tell anyone. It was not disclosed if there would be an elevator for the family vehicles…
3
The final three F-15s from the Montana Air National Guard are scheduled to depart today, according to the Great Falls Tribune.
I’ll have a column posted probably Monday about the failure to retain the F-15 mission in Montana – and make no mistake about it, the loss of the F-15 mission is a failure.

The “Dollar Menu” at McDonalds is being “rebranded” as the “Dollar Menu & More.” Yahoo! Finance reports, “…there will be with $1 and $2 sandwiches and even some items at $5.”
Helpful Hint – There are these stores called “Dollar Stores” and everything’s only a dollar. Amazing place!
